INDUSTRIAL TCE SITE
BRAMPTON
Situation:
-
Approximately 4250 m3 of TCE impact in the soil and groundwater.
-
After years of manufacturing, TCE had migrated into the soil and groundwater underneath the building and areas under the parking lot and driveways.
-
Active business on site. Remediation plan must allow for business to continue operations during implementation.
Task:
-
Remediate soil and groundwater in-situ as to not interrupt day to day operations of business.
-
Install injection wells inside building and operating parking and drive areas using flush mount caps and removable injection heads.
-
Inject organic carbon substrate with micronized ZVI into impacted areas.
-
Ensure site is clean to ensure minimal disruption to operations.
Result
-
Business continued operations uninterrupted during injection process.
-
Consultant confirmed amendment had spread throughout contaminant zone.
-
3 of 4 monitoring wells met MECP Table 3 standards between 6 and 24 months.
-
Few residual daughter compounds in select monitoring wells at 24 months.
-
Reducing conditions still active in substrate at 24 months.
-
Engineering Consultant remarks at 24 month monitoring event; “Overall the results are again very positive. We are seeing VOC concentrations decrease significantly at the Site.”

OIL SPILL IN BEDROCK
BROCKVILLE
Situation:
-
Approximately 600 litres of heating fuel discharged from the holding tank inside the garage adjacent to the home
-
Oil had migrated beneath into the bedrock and made its way into the well which supplied the home
-
Oil was seen coming from the taps of the home
-
Three car garage, all brick, raised bungalow of approximately 4000 sq.ft built on top of limestone bedrock
Task:
Emergency cleanup procedures:
-
Established clean water supply for residence and flushed plumbing system
-
Used existing water well as recovery well and installed Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) to establish hydraulic containment
Use Chemical Oxidation using Stabilized Hydrogen Peroxide:
-
Used BIM200 to remediate impacted concrete floor
-
Installed screened wells along perimeter of impacted zone
-
Installed injection point at source of impact
-
Installed injection system connecting all wells
-
Used existing water well as recovery well, injected stabilized hydrogen peroxide into screened wells and drew towards recovery well
-
Upon achieving MOE compliance standards, decommissioned former water well and installed new well up stream as water supply
Result
-
Successful remediation achieved in 4 months
-
Saved the home
-
Home owners continued to live in the house during the remediation process

HEXAVALIENT CHROMIUM
INDUSTRIAL FACILITY
ONTARIO
Situation:
-
Manufacturing facility using hexavalent chromium in their processes for over 45 years.
-
More than one historical spill of hexavalent chromium reported at the facility.
-
Heavily impacted ground water zone approximately 1300 m3.
-
Client needed to remediate the saturated zone before tenant could move in.
Task:
Place micronized ZVI into the target zone:
-
Approximately 45 cubic meters of micronized zero valent iron was to be placed in the saturated zone.
-
Approximately 109, 2" core holes were drilled through the concrete for direct push access.
-
ZVI was mixed with a suspension agent and then injected into the target zone.
-
Approximately 220,000 liters of amendment was injected into the target zone.
Result
-
Successful remediation achieved in 4 months
-
All monitoring wells came back compliant with MECP standards.
-
Tenant moved in on schedule.
